Fel Werebear Form Guide: How to Beat the Druid Mage Tower in Midnight

Published: 4 November 2026

Categories: Guides

The Fel Werebear comes from one solo fight: The Highlord’s Return, the tank challenge of the Mage Tower, played as a Guardian druid. No group can help you, you can retry as often as you like, and the Tower is open every day of the year. This page is the written version of our own video runs at level 90: the setup we bring, what we press on the pull and which defensive answers each of Kruul’s hits.

The fight at a glance

Challenge The Highlord’s Return
Who earns the form A level 90 druid in Guardian specialization
Enemies Inquisitor Variss, then Highlord Kruul
Where it starts War Councilor Victoria at Deliverance Point, Broken Shore
When Any time. Blizzard made the Mage Tower permanent in March 2022, so there is no event to wait for
Item level 226+ in Midnight. You can buy the gear on the auction house
Rewards Fel Werebear form for all four druid specs, a recolor of the Stormheart Raiment set, A Towering Success

At level 90 the fight runs longer than it used to: Kruul has much more health and his damage went up, while the mechanics stayed exactly the same. That is good news, because this is a fight you win by knowing what comes next. Once you reach 226, more item level only buys you a little extra room.

How to start the challenge

  1. Bring your druid to 226+ item level. The auction house sells gear that gets you there.
  2. Get to Legion Dalaran. A Dalaran Hearthstone is the quickest way.
  3. Take the flight path to Deliverance Point on the Broken Shore.
  4. Switch to Guardian, import the talents below and check that every consumable is in your bags.
  5. Talk to War Councilor Victoria and pick the challenge.

Talent build

This is the setup we found easiest for this challenge. Open your talents, choose Import in the loadout menu and paste the code. Should a later patch change the tree and leave points unspent, fill the gaps by hand and keep the rest.

Consumables and enchants

Do not skip this part. Everything here raises your main stat, and in this fight Agility pays you twice: Kruul dies sooner and each of his hits takes less of your health. Budget about 10,000 gold if you are buying it all at once.

Slot What we use
Flask Flask of the Blood Knights or Flask of Thalassian Resistance
Potion Light’s Potential
Weapon oil Thalassian Phoenix Oil
Food Royal Roast
Drums Void-Touched Drums
Legs Forest Hunter’s Armor Kit
Chest Mark of the Worldsoul
Weapon Berserker’s Rage
Extras if the budget allows Agility gems (+32 Agility) in your sockets, enchants on rings, head, shoulders and feet

Flask, food and oil go on before you enter. Keep the potion and the drums for phase 2.

Holy Ward orbs: the resource that decides the run

Prophet Velen fights next to you, heals you and keeps placing Holy Ward orbs on the platform, roughly one every 30 seconds. Each orb lasts about two minutes, so take the oldest one first. Walking into an orb disorients every enemy on the platform for about three seconds, stops the casts of the adds and restores your health.

The trick that makes this challenge much shorter is to treat orbs as phase 2 ammunition. Touch one in phase 1 only when your health is low and adds are still alive. Everything you leave on the ground now can be chained later, when each orb also pushes back Kruul’s most dangerous cast.

Phase 1: Inquisitor Variss

Open with your burst: Incarnation and Lunar Beam right on the pull. Most of your damage comes from Raze, especially when it crits, so spare Rage goes there. After that, work through this list from the top every time something new appears:

  1. Drain Life. Your main job in this phase. Stop every cast with Skull Bash, or with Typhoon when Bash is on cooldown.
  2. Tormenting Eyes. They spawn around the platform and physical attacks do nothing to them. Hit each one with Moonfire the moment you see it. Forget one and it can throw you off the platform.
  3. Nether Horrors. These adds run at you and start a cast. Interrupt it with Incapacitating Roar or by stepping on an orb, then kill them straight away. They come before Variss every time.
  4. Smoldering Infernals. They deal light damage around them, and when one stops walking it smashes a line in front of itself. Stay out of that line and leave them alone, your cleave will finish them.
  5. Variss. Everything left over goes into the boss.

The pool under the boss

Variss sits in a pool that adds stacks while you stand in it, and each stack removes a percentage of your maximum health. You cannot stay inside for the whole phase. Fight him until you have five or six stacks, step out, wait for the debuff to fall off and walk back in. Time this around the adds: when Nether Horrors are on the way, leave the pool first, because that is the moment you want your full health bar back.

If you get knocked off

You are not dead yet. Skull Bash or Wild Charge can carry you back to a target on the platform, and a Goblin Glider Kit buys you the seconds you need to do it.

Phase 2: Highlord Kruul

In our runs this phase is a bit more manageable than the first one. Use your potion and drums as soon as it starts, then begin chaining the orbs you saved. Stepping on an orb interrupts Annihilate and delays the next cast, so each saved orb means one hit fewer and more free time on the boss.

What to press for each Annihilate

Annihilate grows stronger with every cast, which is why the big cooldowns wait until later. This is the order from our video:

Hit Defensives Why
First Ironfur It is the weakest one. Spend nothing else on it
Second Several stacks of Ironfur + Barkskin Now it starts to hurt, and Barkskin will be back in time for the fourth
Third Ironfur + Survival Instincts Your largest cooldown goes on the first truly dangerous hit
Fourth Ironfur + Barkskin On a prepared druid the boss dies around here

Everything else Kruul does

  • Twisted Reflection. He casts it immediately after the first Annihilate and again after the third. Bash it at once, because while it is active your damage heals him.
  • The leap. Kruul jumps and leaves a pool where he lands. Walk out of it.
  • Adds. They keep coming. Stop their cast with an orb if one is close, otherwise use Incapacitating Roar exactly as you did in phase 1.

Common mistakes

  • Staying in Variss’s pool past six stacks to squeeze in a little more damage.
  • Running through orbs in phase 1 at full health, then having nothing left against Annihilate.
  • Saving Survival Instincts for an emergency and pressing it on the wrong hit.
  • Standing with your back to the edge when an Infernal stops walking.
  • Watching your own health and missing the Twisted Reflection that follows Annihilate.

After the kill

The Fel Werebear does not appear on its own. Visit a barbershop in a capital city, not the transmog vendor, and choose it for your Bear Form. You have to earn it as Guardian, but after that it works in every druid specialization. The recolored Stormheart Raiment set goes to your transmog collection and A Towering Success to your achievements.

The clear also counts toward A Tour of Towers. A druid can do four of the seven challenges alone, which makes it the best first character for the Soaring Spelltome mount. The other three druid specs are listed on our Druid Mage Tower page.

Tired of wiping? Our player can clear it on your own PC through Parsec in about 15 minutes of play, and you watch the whole run. No account sharing.

Fel Werebear form FAQ

How do I get the Fel Werebear form?

Beat The Highlord's Return, the tank challenge of the Mage Tower, as a Guardian druid. Start it with War Councilor Victoria at Deliverance Point on the Broken Shore, then choose the form at a barbershop in a capital city, not at the transmog vendor.

Is the Fel Werebear still obtainable in Midnight?

Yes. The challenge is tuned for level 90 now, so Kruul has more health and hits harder, but the mechanics have not changed and the form can still be earned.

Do I have to wait for Legion Timewalking?

No. Blizzard made the Mage Tower permanent in March 2022, so you can start the challenge on any day.

What item level do I need?

You need 226+ item level in Midnight, and you can buy the gear on the auction house. Above that, consumables and enchants matter more, and extra item level simply gives you more room for mistakes.

Can I earn the form in another specialization?

No. The challenge has to be completed in Guardian. Other tank specs can play The Highlord's Return too, but they earn their own class set and not the Fel Werebear.

Does the Fel Werebear form work in all druid specs?

Yes. You earn it as Guardian, but once it is unlocked it works in every druid specialization.

Why do I keep falling off the platform?

Two things throw you off: a Tormenting Eye you did not hit with Moonfire and the line smash of a Smoldering Infernal. Keep Moonfire ready and never stand in front of an Infernal that has stopped walking.

How many Annihilates will I have to survive?

Usually three or four. A prepared druid kills Kruul around the third or fourth hit, and every Holy Ward orb you saved from phase 1 delays the next one.
